Some Advice For Parents

April 3rd, 2009

Here’s an article about how young boy and young girls have different experiences with regard to their height. Her male friend was tall and thought it was wonderful. The author, who was a tall girl growing up, is not so sure.

I would disagree slightly with the author, but certainly understand the pain she felt growing up taller than everyone else in her class. Read the rest of this entry »

How Often Are You Asked About Your Height?

April 2nd, 2009

Tall women often complain of being constantly questioned about their height, but how valid are these complaints? Are they truly affected by this pestering, or is it just a mere nuisance?

A 6′3 blogger logged every instance of being asked about her height in public and where it occured. The experiment stopped after four months, but the results are somewhat shocking.

Back in 2007 the Daily Mail Online asked: why do tall women love short men? It’s an interesting read and shows pictures that show that, amongst celebrities, shorter men often find tall partners.

But we at TWR don’t buy into the idea that tall women and short men are disproportionately fond of each other. One thing all the men in this article has is money, and we all know rich guys can often date women who would otherwise turn them down.

Of course, there are plenty of tall women who have fallen in love with shorter men and have had story-book lives together. Height has nothing to do with the connection felt by people in love, and a difference in height need not be a bad thing. But is there some phychological phenomenon the naturally attracts tall women and short men? Don’t think so!

Teasing Is Fun Until Someone Gets Annoyed…

March 29th, 2009

Many of us who were tall children know that the questions get tiring, and that other kids aren’t always the friendlies people on the planet. Sometimes, friends like to tease as well. But what if the teasing starts affecting your self-esteem?

Seventeen magazine isn’t exactly a common source for wisdom, but they answer a question from a reading who is finding that her friends constant teasing is causing trouble with her self-esteem. If can be tough getting others to stop making certain jokes — once they know that you are senstive about your height they might try to use it against you. But good friends should have no trouble adjusting, and it may be a good test to see how supportive your friends can be.

Standing Up For Tall People

March 28th, 2009

We estimate that most of our readers are between about 5′9 and 6′2. Tall for a woman, but average to slightly above average for a man. But some of our readers are certainly taller, and there is a growing movement for recognition.

This article from the BBC shows how the Brits are handling the situation. The Tall Persons’ Club, which contains members up to 7′6 in height, wants others to realize the difficulties of being very tall. From cars, to airplanes, to public transportation, the act of traveling can be a chore when nothing is designed for people so tall.

Some of our readers may fall into the “so-tall-traveling-is-a-nightmare” category. But even if you don’t check out the article — maybe it’ll help you appreciate your height.

8′2 Big Bird and 6′7 David Winflied Say: Be Proud!

March 27th, 2009

Sometimes tall women get irritated about comments about their height. If you are one of these people, Dave Winfield and Big Bird understand.

This clip from Sesame Street is an oldie, but definitely a goodie. Most readers are probably a bit older than Sesame Street’s target audience, but maybe some will feel a bit better (and more patient) after this flashback. It is nice to know that the Sesame Street crew understands that tall kids often feel ashamed of their height.

Fashion Tips From Down Undah

March 25th, 2009

From the land of the dingo and the kangaroo:

Dressing for the Tall Woman

The author gives a roadmap that tall women to take in large Australian cities. She also gives some gereral fashion advice.

The author is not tall, so it’s refreshing to hear about the benefits of being tall from someone who is shorter. I absolutely love her descriptions of the frustrations of being tall.

Exclaiming“wow - you’re tall’’ (which apparently happens a lot) is on par with asking a breakfast radio presenter how they find early mornings.

We appreciate the sympathy!

Tall Women are More Ambitious

March 24th, 2009

Tall women tend to have children at a later age and tend to have less children. Some assumed that the reason for this was that tall women have a more difficulty finding a mate. This idea rubbed some reachers the wrong way, and they fired back. Read the rest of this entry »

Jealousy and Accessories

March 24th, 2009

Two more articles posted here:

  • Are shorter women jealous? — Yes, this title is a bit controversial. But please understand our intentions — tall teens so often feel like outcasts. This is a shame! So often we hear that if someone’s picking on us it’s because they’re jealous. Perhaps there is some truth behind this? Our main goal is to encourage women to be happy with their height, so hopefully it will help to understand that tallness is envied by many.
  • Accessories for tall women — Oh this is a fun article. If you are tall, smile. You can wear the most ridiculous accessories imaginable and still pull them off. Many view this as one the blessings of being tall. So you hit your head more often then most? It’s a fair trade :P

Our hope is that some will improve their confidence because of these articles. Being tall is a wonderful thing — embrace it!

More Tall Actresses!

March 23rd, 2009

We’ve added two more biographies:

Liv Tyler — Not many people know that she is 5′10. Not too shabby, huh?

Famke Janssen — Multi-talented actress and model who’s 5′11.

Perusing the list of tall actresses, one fact becomes abundantly clear: tall women can be beautiful! So many tall girls get caught up with their unusually tall stature, and we hope that these examples will convince you that height can be a tremendous asset if you use it to your advantage.

An Economic Spin on Height

March 22nd, 2009

Here’s an article on tallness from an economics guy.

Tall people are more successful in the labor market, but the author wants to know why. If you’re a fan of scientific studies or economics, check out this article for the links if nothing else — there’s some interesting stuff on studies that show tall people have more “cognitive abilites.”

The author was inspired to write because he’s heard many complaints from tall people about legroom on airplanes. Should tall people get seats with more leg room (such as the exit row seats) at no additional charge? Is this fair?

Unaware of the scale of the outrage, I checked out the internet. If you want a small sample of the rage many feel towards flying, check out this collection of Livejournal posts.

Looking Good, No Matter What Your Height

March 21st, 2009

Health is not all about eating green stuff and jogging — focusing on the other aspects of your overall health is important as well. Often, these others aspects of health can also have an impact on appearance as well. Here are a few articles we’ve written on two frequently ignored elements of health and looks:

  • Work on your posture. Whatever you appearance might be, posture will improve it. This is a common problem for tall women — many have developed, consciously or subconsciously, a habit of slouching in an attempt to reduce their height. It doesn’t work, and makes them stand out in a bad way!
  • Muscle toning is beneficial for all women. Don’t worry about putting on too much muscle — even if you have the genes to become a professional bodybuilder, you won’t become a hulking mass of muscle overnight! Weight training can be intimidating, but the sort of training that tones muscle can be learned in minutes and seems to carry the same remarkable cardiovascular benefits that we used to think only aerobic exercises could produce. Tall women have more muscle, and toning it can have a dramatically positive effect on their appearance.

Tallness causes all sorts of creaks and pains for older people, but developing toned muscles and practicing good posture can mitigate some of these issues many encounter. Try to work on these elements of health as soon as possible — it’s cheap and fun.

The Dreaded S-Word

March 21st, 2009

Shoes.

Did you just shudder?

Shoe manufacturers may be the most evil people on the planet. Are they not aware that there are women who wear over a size 9? We’re being a bit unfair — stores have become much better over the past decade or so when it comes to providing a variety of sizes. But finding an awesome pair of shoes which will never be available in your size can be frustrating.

We have an article about tall women’s shoes shopping. It’s worth pointing out that our article on shopping online deals with some issues you may encounter if you choose to buy your shoes online, which we recommend! Where do you go for your shoes?

But we can’t talk about shoes without talking about high heels, can we?

Should tall women wear heels? We wrote an article about it and our conclusion is a resounding yes! Here’s why.

Two Article From Tall Ladies

March 20th, 2009

Here are two blog entries, both from 2006, that explain the benefits and drawbacks for women around six feet tall. Each has a different take on the issue, but there are some common similarities between the two that seem common trait of tall women.

The Joys and Pains of Being Tall — The author has a very mature view of what it means to be tall. She does not like how her height gives others license to comment on everything about her, but she manages.

The Long and Short of It — Being tall has had a real impact on her confidence, which she has come to realize is very helpful with getting rid of unwanted attention.

Both of the authors discuss how others don’t really that discussion about their height can be demeaning, especially from a stranger. Even when the intentions are good, it can be obnoxious to deal with the constant comments.

Two Articles From 6′5 Authors

March 19th, 2009

Here are two interesting blog postings I’ve come across. One, from 2004, is from a a 6′5 guy. Many of our visitors are woman who are at or close to 6′ tall, and a woman at that height is viewed similarly as a 6′5 guy. Roughly, anyway. But he has a great message and I found his writing inspirational.

Of course, we also have visitors who are significantly taller than 6′. Here is an article from a 6′5 gal. She writes about dating and what she has learned she wants in a partner, and offers a great account what dating is like for an unusually tall bachelorette.

Defining tall can be difficult. Both of these authors are in the top 1% of tall people, but there are still those who would tower over them! There is also a profound difference between being a 6′5 woman and a 6′5 man.

Height Discrimination? Heightism?

March 16th, 2009

This BBC Article article tells the story of Ben Sargeaunt-Thomson, a man who was initially offered a job as an air traffic controller before his prospective employer withdrew the offer. What was the reason given?

Ben was too tall!

Ben stands at 6′10, and he sued after the company claimed that Ben could not safely work at their facility. Fortunately, he has found another job as an air traffic controller, but he feels passionately that discrimination based on height needs to be specifically outlawed.
